The beauty of being on the left is that it is so much easier to verbalize your point of view. Everything a liberal says sounds so much more caring and compassionate than the conservative before you sit down and give said issue some thought. Why do you think we are losing the global warming debate? Trust me, it is much easier to chastise the SUV than to defend it. And if conservatives sound nutty defending the SUV, imagine how off our rockers we sound defending the gun.
In the wake of the Virginia tech shootings, we got the typical "gun control, gun control, gun control" knee jerk reaction from those on the left. Before all the facts were even known, the media was already pointing a finger at the state of Virginia's gun control policies and the public was lapping it up. After all, "if the government would just make it harder to obtain a gun, all of these tragic school shooting could be averted." Right? Um....No.
Pop quiz: In the past 18 years, what major North American metropolis has had the greatest rash of school shootings? Not Detriot. Not St Louis. Not Birmingham. Not Dallas. But those gun totin' nuts of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. That's right, more school shootings have taken place in North America's gun control hub than anywhere else. The city of Montreal should be serving as a case study for why gun control legislation will do absolutely nothing to prevent school shootings.
On December 6, 1989, a nutcase by the name of Marc Lepine shot and killed 14 women and injured another 14 people at the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal before killing himself. It remains one of the worst school shootings of all time. As is always the case, people began searching for answers. Rather than blame a deranged gunman hell bent on killing as many women as possible, blame fell squarely on the legally obtained semi-automatic rifle that the gunman used to carry out the murders.
Immediately calls went out for sweeping gun control legislation, and the parrots on Parliament Hill in Ottawa were more than happy to oblige. Keep in mind that gun control legislation in Canada was much more stringent at the time than that of the United States, and the already stricter gun control laws did nothing to prevent this tragedy. But alas, the answer was more symbolic gun control laws.
Yet, in the 16 years since the passage of bill C-17, three more deadly school shootings have taken place in the greater Montreal area. The most recent one happening just seven months ago at Dawson College where one person was killed and another 19 were injured with an ILLEGALLY transported semi automatic weapon.
All four Montreal school shootings had one thing in common, they were all carried out by people with evil in their hearts hell bent on committing murder. No amount of gun control was going to prevent these massacres. A gun was going to be obtained by any means necessary. It's a tough pill to swallow, but the human race is always going to be full of deranged individuals. And no symbolic freedom restricting measures is going to stop them. So the next time someone brings up gun control as a way to avert school shootings, remind them that the gun control capital of North America is also its school shooting capital.
